Most Popular Music Genre in the World

According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s Music Listening 2019 report, pop music is the most popular music genre. The IFPI report is based on data obtained through online surveys conducted between April and May with 34,000 people, aged 16-64, from 21 different countries responding.

The data gathered came from the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Based on the IFPI report, the list of music genres most enjoyed around the globe is the following:

  • Pop
  • Rock
  • Oldies
  • Hip-hop/Rap
  • Dance/Electronic
  • Indie/Alternative
  • K-Pop
  • Metal
  • R&B
  • Classical

Rock is a strong music genre, although it seems to have been written off by many music listeners. There is still a lot of it.

Dance and electronic music are lower than expected. The report appeared to indicate a peak in its popularity several years ago.

K-Pop has become a real force as it now exists as a category outside of traditional pop music. Does it have a life after BTS? We’ll find out next year.

And although pop, rock, and oldies were in the top 3, the report found that 16 to 24-year-olds chose hip hop or rap as their favorite genre more than four times more than any other age group. In South Africa (27%), Russia (23%), Poland (24%), and Germany (21%). More than every fifth child, aged 16 to 24, lists hip-hop and rap as their favorite genre. In France, more than a quarter (26%) of 16 to 24-year-olds say that French-language urban music or hip-hop and rap is their favorite genre.
